Spool knitting, learning on the job

One of the great things about where I work is that I often have the pleasure of observing workshops as the classroom space is very close to my desk area. Right now there is a knitting-focused exhibit on view for another month or so, so naturally workshops have focused on knitting as well! I was responsible for taking photos during the adult workshops, and I’d like to post those separately. This weekend was the last day of the ongoing children’s workshop on the many ways of knitting without needles. Having been curious about it for a long time, I finally asked the instructors to teach me to spool knit.

Here is my creation. So far I have made two like this and a third which is considerably longer.

I love your color choice. Good job. I encourage you to also learn to knit with two needles. My first sock is almost finished. 🙂

I thought you might like the purple! I am hoping to get some new yarn soon of my choosing. This was gifted to me by Marilyn, who taught me the technique. I’ve also learned since that one can make HATS from spool knitting by sewing the cord (a very long one, for sure) together into a hat shape. Awesome!

I’ll bet they have some lovely yarn shops in the Twin Cities. My first sock is finished and the second one started but I’m stuck on a mistake and need to consult an expert mistake corrector tomorrow when Material Mart is open. My goal is to finish sock two so I can buy new yarn to make another pair; I’ve already picked out a Merino Wool that is a lovely color and a heavier weight yarn so I do not have to use size 0 needles for my next pair of socks.
